Calm-down corner plan

A checklist for setting up a calm space, and a simple plan a child can follow when feelings get big.

What to put in the corner

  • A cushion or beanbag
  • A soft blanket
  • Something to squeeze
  • A favourite book
  • Headphones or ear defenders
  • Paper and crayons
  • A feelings chart
  • A breathing card

My calm plan

When I feel…I can…

Breathe with me

Smell the flower (breathe in for 4), blow out the candle (breathe out for 4). Do it five times.

The corner is a place to calm down together, not a punishment. Practise using it when everyone is calm first.
